The ATEX Directive 1999/92/EC  has transposed into Irish Law as the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations in 2007 Part 8 Explosive atmospheres at places of work. It requires employers to classify workplaces where explosive atmospheres may occur into either hazardous or non-hazardous places. Those places identified as hazardous must be classified into zones, and specific prevention measures detailed in the regulations must be applied.
